Parkland Speaks Survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas Share Their Stories Sarah Lerner Books Reviews
- As a graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, I was extremely moved by the words of art on display by both students and staff throughout this book. I'm inspired and in awe, and I encourage everyone to read this book.
- How many times have we heard politicians, concerned citizens, worried Americans utter, post, tweet “thoughts and prayers,†“I can’t imagine…,†and “we don’t want to be defined by this,†after mass shootings that plague our country? We don’t have the vocabulary for gun violence, even though 100 people die a day from it. We don’t know how to respond, what to say, how to move forward, how to make change. That’s why we need books like, Parkland Speaks.
This book is the voice of the students and staff who endured the tragedy at Margory Stoneman Douglas High School just over a year ago. At times in their own handwriting, accompanied with photos, these poems, journal-like entries, anecdotes, memories, illuminate for us the difficult, heart-breaking aftermath of moving forward after trauma.
The grief, anger, sadness, ache of missing friends, classmates, students, survival guilt weaves through. It’s a testament of endurance, of saying I’m still here. This is hard. I’m doing it, but it’s not ok that it happened.
I recognize so much of what fills this book, since I, too, survived a school shooting. I was a second grade teacher at Sandy Hook School. My community and colleagues recognize it all; the fear, confusion, the burden, the pain, the people we used to be and have to get to know now….
This book is important. It’s a part of our history--the part we don’t see in the media. Read it, talk about it, and maybe even find a way to do something about it.
--Abbey Clements, Newtown CT - "Parkland Speaks" gives voice to so many who were forever changed by the tragic and unimaginable events on February 14, 2018. These highly personal poems, essays, journal accounts, photographs, drawings, letters and speeches should inspire all of us to reflect on the need for hope and change in our communities and our country. By sharing of themselves, I imagine they all hope that we too will be forever changed and be called to action to help make our world a safer place.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas teacher Sarah Lerner has done excellent work selecting and compiling these submission while telling her own story of that day and what followed. These voices need to be heard and their stories shared. Please buy and read this book to support them. #MSDStrong #neverforget - The emotional personal accounts in these pages make a lasting impression. Written by students and teachers who survived the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida, this book provides an raw and powerful look into how a community and its individuals mourn and try to heal after such immense loss. The book is designed to look much like a high school notebook, which makes the powerful accounts that much more heartbreaking, reminding you that the poems of grief, anger, resolve, and hope are coming from teenagers. Their voices give me hope for the future. This is a must read book to understand the emotional toll of gun violence on the youth of our country.
- I don't know what this experience was like, but when I read these accounts I am right there holding my breath, heart pounding, hugging friends. Thank you all for sharing this tragic event with us so that we might have some understanding.
- After such a horrible experience, I'm so glad these writers found an outlet to release into. This book cannot be read cover-to-cover in one sitting or with a dry-eye. No matter what your political views are, this book is just a raw, powerful personal account from the victims and survivors. This book helps others understand this. It helps those who are healing to 'see' that they are not alone and hopefully gave them some peace. May they continue to heal!
- This was an absolutely amazing and heartbreaking book. I just wish I could be there to comfort every single one of them. This is a must read for sure.
- Heartfelt
